Radio London
Pirate Radio London was along side Radio Caroline when it came to popularity in the 1960s. Radio London was also known
as 'Big L' and 'Wonderful Radio London' when it started broadcasting off the coast of Frinton-on-Sea, Essex, England on the 16th December 1964. The station broadcast from the ship the MV GALAXY a former USA Minesweeper on 266 metres medium wave using initially a 50k tranmitter
that was increased to 75Kw with a 170ft mast, when Radio Caroline increased it's transmitter power.
Pirate Radio London was the brainchild of Texan millionaire Don Pierson who was looking to launch an all-day commercial music station, it's offices were in Curzon Street London and at one time 'Big L' was estimated to have 17 million listeners to such programs as 'The Radio London Fab 40 presented by DJ Tony Blackburn. As with the majority of Pirate Radio Stations that broadcast in the sixties Pirate Radio London closed on the 14th August 1967 following the Marine Offences Act. Now you can listen to these original pirate broadcasts here - we have many, many more to add as time goes by;;;;enjoy!
